After a successful day of individual company visits on Wednesday, we headed to Unilever for a presentation and a facility tour. Unilever's Finance Director, Kumar Subbiah, gave us a brief overview of the company’s history and operations in Singapore. Mr. Subbiah focused on his company's goal to make a strategic shift towards sustainability. Unilever plans to double in size while halving its environmental footprint and increasing its positive social impact. After Mr. Subbiah patiently answered our numerous questions, we headed to the company's office building. The design of the latter clearly encouraged groupthink and transparent employee interaction: there were virtually no walls to separate the shared working space. Moreover, there was an ice cream shop and a convenience store; a gym and an outside pool; various artwork and creative work areas intended for collaboration of bright minds.
Quite impressed, we headed to have lunch at Halia Restaurant, which is located inside the beautiful Botanical Gardens.
DFS (duty free stores), the luxury retailer catering to the traveling public, concluded our site visits for this week. The Managing Director of DFS, Craig McKenna, shared the unique properties, opportunities, and challenges of the luxury industry. The rest of Thursday was spent in preparations for the final presentations on Friday.
